A doctor's weekend glass house

A glass floor raised above a flood plain, and a very public lawsuit.

Mies van der Rohe designed this glass-walled weekend house for Dr. Edith Farnsworth, a Chicago physician, completed in 1951 beside the Fox River.

Farnsworth and Mies fell out over costs and a lawsuit followed. She later complained publicly that the house was impossible to live in.

She sold it in 1972. The house is now owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
