Claude Monet rented the house at Giverny in 1883 and bought it in 1890. He lived there with his family until his death in 1926.

He built the water garden with its Japanese footbridge and water lilies, which became the subject of hundreds of paintings.

The house and gardens were restored and opened to the public in 1980.
