Architect Philip Johnson finished the Glass House in 1949 on his estate in New Canaan: a single room with glass walls on every side and a brick cylinder holding the bathroom.
He lived on the property for nearly sixty years, later with his partner, curator David Whitney, adding a painting gallery, a sculpture gallery and other buildings to the landscape.
Johnson and Whitney both died in 2005. The house is now owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
