William Faulkner bought a run-down 1840s house in Oxford in 1930 and named it Rowan Oak. He lived there for the rest of his life.

In his study he wrote the day-by-day outline of his novel A Fable in pencil and red grease pencil on the plaster walls. It is still there.

After his death in 1962, his daughter Jill sold the house to the University of Mississippi, which keeps it as a museum.
