Frank Lloyd Wright began Taliesin West in 1937 as a winter home and school, with his apprentices hauling desert stones and pouring them into wooden forms to make 'desert masonry.'
The canvas roofs let the light through; Wright kept altering the buildings almost every winter until his death in 1959.
It is still home to the school that grew out of his fellowship and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of Wright's work.
