Andrew Jackson bought the Hermitage in 1804, and the mansion was built and rebuilt over the following decades. His wife Rachel is buried in the garden.

It was a cotton plantation where about 150 people were enslaved by the time of Jackson's death in 1845.

Since 1889, the Ladies' Hermitage Association has run it as one of the first presidential museums in the country.
