Poet Robinson Jeffers and his wife Una built Tor House in 1919 above Carmel Bay. Jeffers learned masonry from the builder and then kept going on his own.

He spent years hauling granite boulders up from the shore to build Hawk Tower, a gift for Una and their twin sons.

The Tor House Foundation owns the house and gives tours.
