"Surviving Fire and Evolving Purpose"

On March 20, 1900, tragedy struck Old Main when a devastating fire tore through the building, destroying much of the interior and the distinctive central tower. The community rallied, and reconstruction began almost immediately, demonstrating the building's importance to the burgeoning university. While the exterior was largely restored to its original design, the interior was modernized to better suit the growing needs of the institution. Over the decades, Old Main has continuously adapted to serve the evolving university. It ceased to be a dormitory as more specialized buildings were constructed, and its functions shifted primarily to administration and departmental offices. Despite these changes, it has remained a powerful symbol of the university's heritage. Generations of students have walked its halls, and its image is synonymous with the University of Colorado Boulder. Today, it houses the offices of the Chancellor and other senior administrators, continuing its role as the administrative heart of the campus, a testament to its enduring structural integrity and its deep historical significance.
