Site of the Brooklyn Theater Fire

The Brooklyn Theater was the site of one of the deadliest fires in New York City's history, resulting in hundreds of fatalities and significant changes to fire safety regulations.

Brooklyn, NY 11201

On the evening of December 5, 1876, a packed house at the Brooklyn Theater, located on Washington Street, was enjoying a performance of 'The Two Orphans.' The theater, a popular venue, was filled with an estimated 1,000 to 1,200 patrons. Around 11:15 PM, during the third act, a piece of scenery caught fire in the flies above the stage, likely from a gas jet. Initially, the actors tried to continue the performance, hoping to avoid panic, but the flames quickly spread, fueled by highly flammable stage sets and decorations. The audience, realizing the gravity of the situation, rushed for the exits, which were poorly marked and, in some cases, locked or obstructed. The grand staircase, a primary escape route, became a bottleneck, leading to a horrifying crush of people. Firefighters arrived quickly but were hampered by the building's design and the rapid spread of the inferno. The fire consumed the entire structure in a matter of hours, leading to the deaths of at least 278 people, though the exact number was difficult to determine due to the extent of the damage. Many bodies were burned beyond recognition, and some were never identified. The sheer scale of the tragedy shocked the nation and led to immediate calls for stricter fire safety codes in theaters, including requirements for fireproof materials, clear exit signs, and regular inspections. The site later became the location of the Brooklyn Eagle Building.
