Anne Hathaway, who married William Shakespeare in 1582, grew up in this thatched farmhouse in the village of Shottery, a short walk from Stratford-upon-Avon.

Members of the Hathaway family lived in the house for generations, into the late 1800s.

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust bought the cottage in 1892, and it has been open to visitors ever since, with its gardens and orchard.
