Rembrandt bought this house on the Jodenbreestraat in 1639 at the height of his success and lived and worked there for nearly twenty years.
He painted The Night Watch while living here. But the payments were too much, and in 1656 he went bankrupt and lost the house and his collection.
The house opened as a museum in 1911 and has been restored to how it looked in his time.
